MEA CULPA..

Many people will have spotted two mistakes in last Month’s Kalendar.“Third Sunday after Pentecost” instead of “Third Sunday after Epiphany” was  really an error made because of quick typing.
But Bishop Anthony had overlooked the fact that this year Easter falls early, Easter Day being on Sunday,
March 23rd so that, in fact, there are NO Sundays after Epiphany this year!   January 20th was of course Septuagesima Sunday and January 27th Sexagesima Sunday. All our clergy realised this! Quinquagesima Sunday falls on February 3rd before Ash Wednesday on February 6th.   True apologies for these errors.

ASH WEDNESDAY:

As just mentioned this falls on February 6th and is a day of fasting and abstinence.
There will be Solemn Masses and Imposition of Ashes at Peterborough at 10am and Hampstead at 7pm.
Low Mass and Ashing at Forfar at 11am; Shepherds Bush at 9am; Midhurst at 1pm; Rhondda at Noon
The clergy are prepared to impose Ashes at all Masses during February for those who are unable to attend one of the Ash Wednesday Masses. Easter confessions should sensibly be arranged with the clergy now.

FEAST OF THE INFANT OF PRAGUE:

This fell on Tuesday, January 8th and was celebrated in Bohemia and also in Hampstead with Solemn Mass at Noon. Masses were followed by the customary devotions to the Infant of Prague (Prazke Jezulatko). Many Catholic churches outside the Czech Lands have statues of the Infant of Prague without knowing the true significance of it. In part the Infant represents the triumph of the Catholic Religion over protestantism in Bohemia following the Battle of the White Mountain in 1620. But above all the Infant or Child of Prague is a devotion to our Divine Saviour in His human childhood. Those who approach the Infant of Prague with love will certainly obtain many spiritual blessings and general help.
The memorial stone to Tomas Vychodil, one of our East Bohemia congregation who died tragically last June aged 32, has now been erected in Slatinany cemetery. In Czech tradition the stone shows a photograph of Tom as well as his own personal motto:Zustavej myslenkami v horach (in Latin “Manere volo in montibus”)
The best English translation of this is “My thoughts dwell in the heights”.This had for dear Tom a threefold meaning: spiritual, in that he loved God and strove to be near Him; intellectual, in that he strove for high learning and academic excellence; and physical, in that he loved mountaineering and rock climbing.
Dear Tom – you are indeed now “in montibus” and, surely, already journeying quickly towards GOD+
Our people in Eastern Bohemia will never forget him. Tom is buried with his grandfather, a Czech patriot who fought with the White Army in Russia against the evil of bolshevik communism. Bishop Anthony will bless the gravestone on his next visit which hopefully will be in the late summer.
Our British Faithful may like to know that these notes are translated into Czech  by Petr Bozon, Guardian of our Prague Mission and Bishop Anthony’s cousin, before being distributed in the Czech Missions.

DO PLEASE KEEP THOSE SECOND CLASS STAMPS COMING!!

They are a source of real income to the Archdiocese and help tremendously with the postal bill for the despatch of the monthly Notes. As we’ve already stressed: many of our older Faithful don’t have access to a computer – and thus to our Web Site – and really do rely on the “old fashioned word” as a vital means of communication. Particular thanks to all who’ve sent stamps during January. Lenten donations would  be most welcome. Cheques should be made payable to “The Traditional Roman Catholic Church” and sent to Bishop Anthony at the address at the top of the Kalendar or to Mr.Simon Gibbs, our ArchConfraternity Treasurer, at:
Gibbs & Co.,Blackwell House,Guildhall Yard,London,EC2V.5AE.
God will bless you.  Holy Mass is offered monthly for all our benefactors.

JUST A REMINDER…

Although we are now firmly and permanently The ArchConfraternity of Our Lady of Victories, you may have observed that monetary donations are still payable to “The Traditional Roman Catholic Church”. At present, because of banking procedures, our treasurer,Simon Gibbs, and the Chapter of Advice decided to retain the old name in this one matter.

OUR LADY OF MANCHESTER AT MANCHESTER:

There was sung Mass at 1pm on Wednesday 23rd January at Urmston. Bishop Anthony went by train to Rugby where he was collected by car; though really the train journey to Manchester is always very pleasant. Thanks to dear Penny Inglefield for all she does.
It is always a delight to be with you all. Lunch and Meeting followed the Mass and all present expressed thanks to Miss Blackshaw for making three delicious chicken and mushroom pies!  Rather as at Cardigan,
our Manchester people decided that a Mission just based on the University was too narrow. Although we have several faithful students, older people from several parts of the City now attend.  We have Penny to thank for all she does in promoting the cause of Catholic tradition. As with Monmouth and Usk, we know the Manchester folk sometimes feel neglected in these Notes. Well,a genuine, heartfelt thank you this time!

SAINTS TEILO AND PADARN,BRECONSHIRE:

Saturday, February 9th is St. Teilo’s Day – the principal Patron of the Breconshire Mission. A Saturday feast often means a larger turn-out and Fr.Flynn begs you all to make a special effort on the 9th. There will be Solemn Mass at Crickhowell [Mrs Ann Watkins] at 11am.
Before Mass there will be Imposition of Ashes. A Patronal Lunch will follow and Fr.Flynn hopes that, in honour of the Feast, it will not be too Lenten!! Bishop Anthony would have liked so much to be with you but must be in Rochdale the day before for Mass. He knows you will understand. He promises to make a special effort in the coming Spring to sing Mass in Breconshire. God + Bless you all and a thousand thanks.

WILL CLERGY AND GUARDIANS

please send in any new names to be included on the Sick List at your earliest convenience – and tell us to remove others! Thanks.Holy Mass is offered monthly for all on the List.

SAINT JOHN BAPTIST,EBBW VALE & TREDEGAR:

The monthly Mass was at Tredegar on Tuesday,
29th January at 6pm. Thanks so much to Miss O’Hare for her generous hospitality and to Miss Riley for all she does. Father Flynn reported 14 people. Miss Riley recently bought 4 solid silver candlesticks at Builth Wells at an Antiques Fair with money from a small legacy. They will grace the altar that she always loves to erect in her sitting room. The February Mass is at Ebbw Vale on Tuesday 19th  by kind permission of Mrs O’Shea. The Bishop is so happy that the Cwm people now attend Ebbw Vale Masses even though they are part of the Abertillery & Six Bells Mission.  Catrina Morgan always brings a car load from Abertillery to support Ebbw Vale, in any case! There will actually be Solemn Mass at Cwm on Tuesday,February 12th.

Details in the Kalendar. Do please all attend to make it a prayerful, united occasion. Thanks to Mr.Richards.

ARCHCONFRATERNITY WEBSITE:

After teething troubles the renewed site seems to be working well.  Many people missed it in recent weeks as letters and phone calls have shown. We owe Fr.Emilio and Mr.Shane Dunlavey a debt of gratitude for all they do. The actual new domain name is  www.aolv.org.uk
