THESE NOTES ARE BEING POSTED OUT EARLY

on account of Bishop Anthony’s forthcoming Welsh and Monmouthshire Visitation which begins on Thursday, August 21st and ends on Friday, August 29th.

THE VISITATION OF THE BISHOP METROPOLITAN TO THE CZECH LANDS

This was from July 29th till August 12th. Although Bishop Anthony was some of the time in Eastern Bohemia, he also stayed in Brno, the capital city of Moravia, where new contacts have been established and a new Mission launched – rather by chance, though more likely because we trust that God looks favourably on our great Czech work.
I must thank Jaroslava Tenkratova and her student son, David Tenkrat, for their very great hospitality and generosity during my visit. They are, in fact, both cousins of our own Father Lukas Tenkrat, and Jaroslava is a member of the Chrudim Mission where I said Mass at 10am on August 7th  for fourteen people.  There was on Wednesday, August 6th at 6pm, Feast of the Transfiguration, Pontifical High Mass at Havlickuv Brod in a small Catholic chapel-of-ease where Father Lukas says his daily Mass. He was Deacon and Father Vojen was Subdeacon. We thank the Novus Ordo Catholics of the town for all their kindness. The Mission there is growing and there were sixteen people at Mass. Ena, Father’s devoted sister, and several of their ladies had prepared a delicious supper of cold goose, knedliky and salad with traditional Czech cherry tart and cheese to follow. Czech generosity with food does not help ones waist line it must be said! The sad part was Bishop Anthony’s visit to the grave of young Tom Vychodil at Slatinany. The stone with dear Tom’s photo is now in place; it was blessed with Holy Water and prayers for the dead said. I left a beautiful bouquet of pink and yellow carnations from everyone in England who had known Tom.
Back in Brno, thanks to a most fortunate, happy meeting with the Vicar General of the Minoritsky Church, Bishop Anthony offered two traditional Latin Masses and it was the first time in nearly 40 years since the Old Rite had been offered there. Bishop Anthony had met Father Josef after attending Solemn Vespers at his church and, after telling him about the work of The ArchConfraternity in Bohemia, was invited to sing the Old Mass at the High Altar on the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows. A privilege indeed. Father’s kindness extended to making sure that a goodly number of parishioners was present. Four young priests, all under forty, care for the parish, and some elderly nuns look after them! A lovely lunch followed in the Refectory when the invitation was made to found a Mission Cell of The ArchConfraternity in Brno – our first one in Moravia.  Several older people present begged Father Josef to learn the Old Rite and Bishop Anthony gladly tutored him that week. The second Mass was offered on the following Sunday for a good congregation. The traditional vestments stored in the church, many of 18th and 19th century origin, are really some of the most exquisite one could ever behold.    + That meeting by chance was surely arranged by Our Blessed Lady! +

The little mission has been entitled Our Lady of the Snows – Panny Marie Snihova.    DEO GRATIAS!  +

TWO NEW MISSIONS IN CARDIFF!!

During Bishop Anthony’s Welsh Visitation, by the express request of our Cardiff Faithful, two new Missions in the City will be founded. Mrs Helen Vassilakis will be Guardian of Saint Teilo’s, Roath. Helen will be instituted into the ancient Order of Deaconess during the Visitation.
The second new Mission will be Saint Martin’s, Cardiff Central, and the work there will be more “on the street” with our people ministering to the homeless. Let us remember that Saint Martin cut his own cloak in half and gave it to a beggar. Father Mark will be Priest-in-Charge at Cardiff Central and by request of the
Church Council, Bishop Anthony will be Vicar General of the new Mission. Slowly our Cardiff work grows!
Mr.John Allen will be raised on Sunday, August 24th to the Subdiaconate. A full report of the Visitation will be in the October Kalendar/Notes. Father Mark obviously remains the overall Parish Priest in Cardiff.

SOLEMN MASS AT ABERTILLERY:

Will be offered on Wednesday, August 27th at Noon at Hill Street by permission of Catrina Morgan. Bishop Anthony so looks forward to being with you all again and does hope that people from our other Monmouthshire missions will attend. Lunch and Meeting will follow and there will be a full report next time. The bishop thanks Mr. Raymond Dobbs in advance for his hospitality.

NEXT MANCHESTER MASS:

On Wednesday, September 17th at Urmston at 1pm. Renewed thanks to dear Penny for all she does. During the Mass Lyn Braithwaite will be confirmed. Moira says she will bring some of the Rochdale folk! Four of our students will be back in Manchester and have also promised to come!

NEXT MASS AT CARDIGAN:

On Saturday, September 13th at Noon. The last was Thursday, August 7th just a day before Fr. Flynn went to Normandy with Moira & Desmond. He is back at the helm, rejuvenated!
Renewed thanks to Paul, Steve and Gwyneth for all they do at Llandysul and at Lampeter.

THE LATE MRS ISOBEL HURGON:

Isobel, one of our original Hampstead supporters, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 29th at the age of 92.  She lived in Hampstead for sixty years but came from Swansea. When her health failed, her family took her home to Wales and she was cared for with love and dignity at The Grange, a nursing home in Carmarthenshire, for over two years. Her late husband, +Kenneth, was an Old Catholic Bishop and they were good friends of Bishop Anthony for thirty years. Though Isobel had a deep interest in Old Catholicism, she remained an Anglican, and it was the Dean Emeritus of Llandaff, Very Revd John Rogers who ministered to her faithfully and conducted her funeral at Hampstead Cemetery on August 13th. Bishop Anthony assisted and also spoke briefly about +Kenneth and Isobel at the graveside. They are,
these true Christian souls, now reunited! Two Masses were offered for Isobel at the Hampstead Oratory.

May Our Lady of Penrhys and all the Saints of Wales escort her into Paradise!

DO PLEASE KEEP THOSE SECOND CLASS STAMPS COMING!!

They are a source of real income to the ArchConfraternity, helping tremendously with the postal bill for the despatch of the monthly Notes. As we’ve already stressed: many of our older Faithful don’t have access to a computer – and thus to our Web Site – and really do rely on the “old fashioned word” as a vital means of communication. Particular thanks to all who’ve sent stamps during August. Please send a donation for St. Michael. Cheques should be made payable to “The Traditional Roman Catholic Church” and sent to Bishop Anthony at the address at the top of the Kalendar or to Mr.Simon Gibbs, our ArchConfraternity Treasurer, at:
Gibbs & Co.,Blackwell House,Guildhall Yard,London,EC2V.5AE.
God will bless you.    Holy Mass is offered monthly for all our benefactors.
