DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS FOR MAY  2007.

+Thoughts for the Month in which we await the Coming of the Holy Ghost+

Be the eye of God between me and each eye;Between me and each purpose God’s purpose lie,
Be the hand of God between me and each hand;Between me and each shield the shield of God stand.
God’s desire between me and each desire be;Be God’s bridle between each bridle and me.
And no man’s mouth able to curse me I see.

Between me and each pain, the pain of Christ show;Between me and each love the love of Christ grow.
Between me & each dearness Christ’s dearness stay;Christ’s kindness between me & each kindness aye.
Between me and each wish the wish of Christ found;Between me and each will the will of Christ bound.
And no venom can wound me and make me unsound.

Be the might of Christ between me and each might;Be the right of Christ between me and each right.
Flow of the Spirit between me and each flow;Between me and each lave the Spirit’s lave go.
Between me and each bathe the Spirit’s bathe clean; And to touch me no evil thing can be seen.

(a poem of the Western Highlanders – translated from Scottish Gaelic)

Bishop Anthony writes: As we continue to celebrate the Resurrection (and our Redemption) with joy;and as we await, prayerfully and confidently, the Coming of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost, let us meditate on the prayerful words of this old Celtic poem. The words remind us of our Christian obligation to place GOD,Father,Son and Holy Spirit, between us and our neighbour, and in the midst of us and all our thoughts and actions. Pentecost is as much a time of rebirth as Easter – indeed the two solemnities are closely connected:not least because it was by the power of God the Holy Ghost that our Divine Lord rose from the dead and remains with us,in this life, for ever!
In these weeks of Easter joy let us also sit with our Lady and the Apostles as they waited,in great faith,
contemplating the Coming of the Holy Spirit. They knew the Spirit would come because Christ had promised it. If any of the Apostles still had doubts,it was surely our Lady who reassured them, for she knew that everything JESUS said was true! The Spirit leads us into all truth.Pentecost was the birth of the Catholic Church and we thank God,the Holy Ghost for our own rebirth – and the healing of certain divisions amongst us which caused Him displeasure. Above all, let us this Pentecost celebrate the great Reconciliation which has brought into being the Catholic Orthodox Union of Saints Peter and Paul! +Amen+

Let us pray:We beseech Thee,O Lord, that the Holy Ghost, the Paraclete,Who proceedeth from Thee,
may enlighten our minds:and lead us,as Thy Son hath promised, into all truth. Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the same Holy Ghost, ever one God unto ages of ages. +Amen+

And a passing thought:

One of the reasons why we find it so hard to pray is the infrequency and shortness of our prayers!
